Shutterstock Metadata Guide 2026

How to optimize your titles and keywords for the world's largest stock library.

Shutterstock's search algorithm behaves differently than Adobe Stock's. While Adobe prioritizes title phrasing, Shutterstock leans heavily on keyword variety and specific technical terms (when appropriate) and correct categorization.

1. The Commercial vs. Editorial Split

Unlike some platforms, Shutterstock draws a hard line between Commercial and Editorial metadata.

Commercial Rules

  • NO logos, brand names, or recognizable people without releases.
  • Titles must describe the concept.
  • "Team collaboration in modern office"

Editorial Rules

  • MUST follow: CITY, STATE, COUNTRY - MONTH DAY YEAR: Description.
  • Can include brand names if newsworthy.
  • "NEW YORK, NY - JULY 4 2026: Fireworks over..."

Note: Metadataly focuses primarily on generating Commercial metadata, which is safe for all platforms.

2. Keyword Strategy: Volume & Variety

Shutterstock allows up to 50 keywords, though Metadataly generates 49 keywords (compatible with both Shutterstock and Adobe Stock). Unlike Adobe, Shutterstock's auto-suggestions can sometimes be vague. Metadataly's AI fills this gap by generating highly specific, descriptive keywords that humans often miss.

Differing from Adobe:

3. Categories Matter More Here

On Shutterstock, selecting the wrong category can bury your image. You get to pick two. Metadataly suggests the most appropriate primary category, usually mapping to "Business", "People", or "Technology" for high value.

4. Recent "Data Licensing" Opportunity

Shutterstock now licenses data for AI training. This means your metadata needs to be literally accurate. If it's a "red apple," say "red apple." Don't just say "fruit."

Precise, descriptive metadata increases the chance of your content being selected for dataset licensing, providing passive income beyond standard downloads.

💡 Quick Tip: Metadataly's AI 'sees' your image. If there's a laptop on the table, it adds keywords like "technology," "wireless," "internet," and "computer," ensuring both conceptual and literal coverage.
